Statue of bag bearer alley Utrecht

About the project

The Zakkendragerssteeg is a well-known street in Utrecht of about 130 meters long, located between the Oudegracht and the Vredenburg. For the Vereniging Grachtstegen Utrecht, Reszto made a reproduction of the statue of the sack bearer to hang there.

The original figurine(also a replica of the wooden original) hangs on a gate at Oudegracht 237. Behind this gate used to be the waiting room of the sack bearers' guild. Bag porters were porters who used to carry merchandise and products from the canal to the store/shop.

The Vereniging Grachtstegen also wanted a reproduction for in the Zakkendragerssteeg in Utrecht. A waiting room was built in this alley around 1580 for the porters who worked the north of Utrecht. Around 17th century they actually started living in and around that "Zakkendragerssteeg". The street name related to this profession appears for the first time in 1619 and in time this will also become the defintive name for the alley.

Because of this, the Moat Lane Association thought it appropriate to also hang a copy of this statue in the Zakkendragersteeg.

The painted copy made by Reszto is now on display there.
