Domtower miniature with Dom debris

About the project

A mini Cathedral Tower made of leftover material, made from debris released during the restoration of the Cathedral. I had been walking around with this idea for years before it could actually be implemented in 2022. When it was announced that you could submit an idea to make something with debris from the Dom, I immediately signed up. The plan of the Brokkenmakers was to use the residual material of the Dom in a circular way. And not as backfill material for under highways which is what normally happened with stone construction debris. There were many entries to this ideas competition from local Utrecht makers. In fact, there were many types of stone to be given away, from large ornaments to containers full of debris from the Dom Tower. I only needed the rubble which I would later grind back into fine sand and gravel. The ideas ranged from Cathedral stone ceramics to large works of art made of sandstone ornaments, my idea was a bit simpler. A mini Cathedral Tower from leftover material in various sizes.

I designed the new Domtower together with Studio Raket a former colleague of the Createur, the place where I have my studio. I used the 3D design to make a resin print, from which casts were later made.

I mixed the finely ground Domstone with a durable resin and used it to cast new miniatures of the tower. A beautiful Domtower made of leftover material was born, called "A Piece of Me." In the figurine, you can clearly see the pieces of Domstone, giving it a natural stone-like appearance. AND with every sale, a 10% goes back to the real tower for the realization of the lighting artwork.

These mini Domtowers "A Piece of Me'' are for sale from me at my webshop koopdedom.com.
