Roman tombstone Marcus Mallius

About the project

For the municipality of Rijnwaarden, Reszto made a concrete reproduction of an ancient Roman tombstone. This tombstone was once found during the dredging of a river near the town of Herwen. The excavation belongs to one of the most important Roman archaeological finds in the Netherlands. Partly because the stone mentioned where the Roman soldier (Marcus Mallius) was stationed.

The place Carvium(now Herwen) was described on the stone, something not normally done much on Roman tombstones. Carvium was an important place in the Roman Netherlands, here stood a Castellum(Roman fort) on the spot where the Rhine and Waal rivers met. The Rhine used to be the border of Roman Holland, a strategic place and a means of transporting goods and people.

The municipality of Rijnwaarden wanted a reproduction close to where the stone was once found. Reszto made a mold of a plaster impression once made of the original stone and reworked the copy to resemble the original old tombstone. The original tombstone is in the museum "het Valkhof" in Nijmegen.
