Miffy statue in Utrecht
About the project
For the municipality of Utrecht, Reszto was allowed to restore the Miffy statue on the Mariaplaats.
Unfortunately, Miffy's ears were torn because someone had probably hung on to the ears to take a nice picture with them.
This sculpture was once featured in the MiffyArt parade. Retailers around the Mariaplaats purchased the sculpture at auction and had it placed on the Mariaplaats.
What makes this Miffy statue in Utrecht so special is the painting. On one side the creator Dick Bruna is painted on it and on the other side Miffy.
The sculpture is therefore called " Dick Pluis, an iron formula," painted by artist Jacques Tange.
The Miffy statue is made of fiberglass reinforced polyester and consists of two separate parts glued together. Hence, this is also the weak spot of the statue, the seam where the parts are glued together. Reszto refilled the cracks in the ears and reinforced the entire statue from the inside with a layer of polyester and fiberglass.
Then the original painting of Miffy was restored in its entirety. The same type of paint and epoxy finish was used for this so that no difference in color and finish can be seen.
A new bottom was also fastened in with stainless steel threaded ends to secure the whole thing back to the pedestal on the Mariaplaats.
An honorable job to restore this icon of Utrecht to its former glory and now may once again shine on hundreds of tourists' photos.
