Reproduction statues of Hasselt stone lions: Rebuilt Veerpoort complete again
The iconic sandstone statues that once graced Hasselt's Veerpont have been brought back to life in the form of beautiful reproductions. The casting mold was made from one of the original lions stored at the municipal yard. Then the new lions were cast off in this rubber mold. These replicas, which were an important part of the city's history, are now cast in colored concrete. This durable concrete, which is aged with pigments after casting, thus takes on a look closer to the original material (sandstone).
The coats of arms that were later repainted from the original are the arms of Overijssel and Hasselt. This repainting was done using a mold and painted with a durable 2-component coating so that the coats of arms retain their color for a long time.
Following the reconstruction of the Hasselt Veerpont, the reproduction sculptures were reinstalled to crown this gate. The reproductions were painstakingly crafted to preserve the details and grandeur of the original sandstone sculptures, but with the benefits of modern concrete, which can withstand both the elements and the ravages of time.
These reproductions offer a fascinating connection between the past and the present, honoring Hasselt's rich history with today's reproduction techniques. They are a visual highlight for both Hasselt's residents and the many visitors who come to discover the city.
