Reproducing Fireplace Ornaments in Utrecht
About the project
For Conscious Hotel Oudegracht in Utrecht, Reszto reproduced the reliefs from a 17th-century fireplace. Using a combination of 3D scanning, resin printing, and traditional casting techniques, we created several replicas of the historic ornaments. These were displayed in one of the hotel’s luxury rooms.
From a historical relief to a 3D-printed model
When reproducing historical fireplace ornaments, the original shape and details are key. For this project, Jaap from Replicad provided the 3D scans of the reliefs. This allowed the existing work to be digitally captured as the basis for the reproductions.
The models were then 3D-printed in resin using MTB3D. These prints served as the starting point for the artisanal work at Reszto: creating the molds and producing the castings.
Making Molds and Casting Fireplace Ornaments
At Reszto, we created molds from the printed models, which allowed us to reproduce the reliefs multiple times. This ensured that the same shapes and details were present in every cast.
After casting, we carefully finished the replicas for installation near the fireplace. The result brings the historical design language of the 17th-century reliefs back into the interior of Conscious Hotel Oudegracht.
This project demonstrates how digital reproduction and traditional craftsmanship complement each other. A 3D scan captures the shape, a resin print makes that shape tangible again, and the final replicas are created using molds and casting techniques.
