Hourglasses cemetery

About the project

Two gate crowns in the shape of hourglasses were made for the general cemetery in Woudenberg. The cemetery was renovated and expanded, including an additional entrance.

On the old entrance were two large hourglasses made of concrete. Reszto made cardboard molds of the various parts from the original models. All parts were measured so that every size was known. Using these molds and measurements, the parts were recreated in wood. Some parts of the hourglasses were made by a wood turner, others Reszto could make himself in MDF.

From these wooden models we made silicone molds again to cast the new artificial stone models in. The molded parts of the hourglass were assembled using stainless steel dowels and gluing.

The reproductions of the hourglasses are identical to the two existing ones standing on the old entrance. An additional challenge was the surface treatment with fine gravel (washed gravel). Reszto designed a method to still achieve this effect and succeeded, as the photos show.
